Venous Ulcers

Venous ulcers are skin sores that are slow to heal due to the poor circulation to the limbs affected by these sores. These sores can take a long time to heal and usually stick around for anywhere from several weeks to years.

Venous ulcers can also lead to more serious problems in the future if not treated properly and in a timely manner.

What Causes Venous Ulcers?

When pressure builds in veins due to malfunctioning venous valves blood pools in the veins causing venous insufficiency. Repeated, long-term pooling causes the vein walls to stretch which then results in blood leaching into the subcutaneous tissue. Over time, the tissue breaks down due to lack of oxygen which causes necrosis and open sores. Venous ulcers generally happen around the ankle, bony areas of the limb.

Older individuals, particularly women, suffer from venous ulcers. People who smoke, have previous leg injuries, suffer from varicose veins, are obese, or suffer from circulation problems.

Treatment of Venous Ulcers

Depending on the severity of the venous ulcers there are a number of steps to take when treating them. The primary focus for treating these ulcers is to make sure the ulcer site is free of infection and necrotic tissue. Antibiotics will be prescribed and the wound area will be cleaned and treated so that normal healing can begin.

Once the wound is treated or the treatment process has begun, the underlying condition that caused the ulcer will be addressed.

For patients with arterial disease, compression therapy is one of the most common treatment options.

Micronized Flavonoid and Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Diosmin and Hesperidin are flavonoids are derived from citrus fruit rind and give these rinds their bright, beautiful colors. They support normal venous function in patients with chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, leg heaviness, edema, skin changes, stasis dermatitis, venous ulcers, night cramps, and Restless Leg Syndrome. Micronization is essential for proper gut absorption.
