Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Leg veins have one-way valves that force blood to circulate in one direction against the force of gravity. These valves keep blood from pooling in the legs allowing it to circulate back to the heart efficiently.

What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)?

In patients that suffer from Chronic Venous Insufficiency, these valves don’t work as they should. The valves weaken over time or due to conditions that cause poor circulation. When this occurs, blood finds its way back down to the legs and feet. This pooling blood can cause pain, varicose veins, color changes in the skin, and even ulcers in the legs.

People who suffer from CVI experience the following symptoms:

  • Swelling in the legs and ankles
  • Heaviness in the legs
  • Pain
  • Itchiness
  • Skin texture and color changes
  • Varicose veins

What Causes Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

There are several conditions and factors that contribute to CVI. Women are more likely to have CVI. Deep vein thrombosis, blood clots located in deep veins of the leg, can damage the one-way valves of the leg veins which will cause CVI.

Lack of exercise and or sitting/standing for extended periods of time can raise the pressure in the veins of the legs which can damage and weaken the valves.

Other causes of CVI include:

  • Obesity
  • Old age
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetic predisposition to CVI
  • Past history of blood clots
  • Being a smoker

Treatment for Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Depending on the severity of CVI, a medical doctor may either suggest a number of self-care recommendations including the use of compression garments. These garments are tight, elastic stockings that squeeze the legs pushing blood out of the legs to relieve the pressure that can further damage or weaken the valves of the leg veins.

Other self-care includes:

Moving legs regularly to promote blood flow if standing or sitting for long periods of time.
Caring for wounds or open sores.
Losing weight if necessary.

A medical doctor may also recommend a number of more invasive procedures should the condition of the leg veins and chronic venous insufficiency be more serious or advanced.

Procedures include:

  • Sclerotherapy
  • Varicose vein stripping
  • Phlebectomy

Micronized Flavonoid and Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Diosmin and Hesperidin are flavonoids are derived from citrus fruit rind and give these rinds their bright, beautiful colors. They support normal venous function in patients with chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, leg heaviness, edema, skin changes, stasis dermatitis, venous ulcers, night cramps, and Restless Leg Syndrome. Micronization is essential for proper gut absorption.
